Festival diary: Monty Python's Flying Circus in French

A bit odd to start off with, which could be put down to lack of familiarity, but in retrospect the early parts of the show weren't using the best material. Thankfully things got a lot better, with the cast of four men and one woman quickly settling into their roles. They'll get better as the run progresses.

The sketches were well selected, a good mixture of the familiar and the more obscure - the title song from The meaning of life sitting side by side with four men arguing about which of them was worst off as a child - and some added touches of humour, such as one of the actors appearing to forget his lines and having to look at the surtitles for help. (I say apparently because something similar happened in Saturday's preview so it could have been intentional.)

It all finished with a rousing rendition of "Sit on my face" (translated to jouis dans ma bouche, i.e. "come in my mouth"), a suitably unsuitable way of bringing this very peculiar, but fun, show to a close.

Monty Python's Flying Circus is at 4pm every day at the Ballroom of the Assembly Rooms, George Street, until Monday 29th August. Phone the Festival Fringe box office (0131 226 0000) for details.
