Shakespeare's passions
A true tour de force by a veteran of the one-man Shakespearean show. After pieces looking at Shakespeare on love, power and the fantastic, David Owen-Bell has here devised a performance examining all aspects of the human condition as portrayed by the Bard. In the seasoned hands of Bruce Morrison, it is an unqualified success.
Portraying characters from 19 plays - strangely, the Roman tragedies are left out - is no mean feat, but Morrison holds his audience rapt. From high comedy (bending Shakespeare's words into a request to switch off mobile phones) to an incredibly affecting Ophelia, this is a must for any lover of the English language, even with (or perhaps because of) the inevitable lines-you-know-but-can't-quite-place syndrome.
Shakespeare's passions is on at 1:15pm at the Gilded Balloon (13 Bristo Square) every day until Sunday 27th August. Phone the Festival Fringe box office (0131 226 0000) for details.
