The real Inspector Hound

Previews of Fringe shows can leave one feeling a bit short-changed, and while there were a couple of bits still needing a bit of polish, the Old Gaol Theatre Company's production of The real Inspector Hound never ceases to entertain. Stoppard's simultaneous attack on critics and the conventions of the theatrical whodunnit can suffer from a lack of balance, but neither target dominated over the other, making their eventual collision all the more satisfying.

Perhaps most satisfying was the adoption by Birdboot and Moon of arty voices when discussing the play, this professional stance very much at odds with their personal concerns. Viv Beckett's Lady Muldoon, played with a dash of Margot Leadbetter, is a delight, while it is to be hoped the wayward nature of Jim Levi's moustache is intentional. A little bit of tightening around the edges and this will be self-recommending.

The real Inspector Hound is on at 11:45am at the Roman Eagle Lodge (2 Johnston Terrace) every day until Sunday 13th August. Phone the Festival Fringe box office (0131 226 0000) for details.
