Transamerica
An absolute delight. In lesser hands, this would have been just another road movie. Transamerica, like Rain man, ignores these formulaic restriction and instead turns into a relationship drama.
There's no doubting this is Felicity Huffman's film: her Bree is a bundle of nervy mannerisms, the possibility of falling apart ever round the corner, essentially a character longing for acceptance. Kevin Zegers provides solid (if unexceptional) support, and of the remaining characters, Fionnula Flanagan and Graham Green shine as Bree's almost grotesque mother and an unexpected possibility of romance respectively.
Strangely, considering the seriousness of the subject matter, Transamerica tends to concentrate on the comedy more than the drama. Given how much I enjoyed the film, however, I'm apt to be generous and say that the comparative sparsity of dramatic moments heightens their impact no end.
